"[...] is to give up that which really does not suit your spouse."
Ursula Buchan, Beyond the Thirty-Nine Steps: A Life of John Buchan
To put this in context, on their honeymoon John Buchan took his wife Susie mountaineering; while they lived to tell the tale, the climb was not a success. As he later told a friend, 'If I had not had the two best guides in Europe we should not have got down.' "He hardly mountaineered seriously again."
I post this with a certain wry amusement and a pointed look at Mr. C. given his recent escapade.
Speaking as a person who was born and bred on the side of a Welsh mountain I must say that if you do not repect said mountain, your life will be come difficult.

Wise words.

Hmm, disagree with this I am afraid :-) However don't expect your partner to join in/accompany you is certainly a reasonable expectation.

But to add weight to the quotation's advice, an article in today's Times ( http://bit.ly/2IJexyL ) covers a major benefit of keeping your spouse happy!

Sadly I am not a subscriber so can't read your interesting link. I wasn't suggesting being a "miserable" partner to someone, just that doing every activity in common with your partner is not something I personally wish to do.
