If you've had enough of sweet things made from rich, dark fruit, try Nigel Slater's banana cardamom cake (recipe also in The Christmas Chronicles). Perfect with coffee, or as a pudding - warm - with ice cream, or mascarpone.

It would be time, for less rich desserts, that's for sure. :-)

It sounds lovely. Have you tried the Dark Chocolate Spice cake from the same book?

Yes indeed!

I haven't made it yet, Nicky, but it was one of the recipes I marked to try as it sounded so good.

I haven't yet tried a recipe ... I wonder if you thought the same as I did about the end of the book? So abrupt, reading it was like listening to a friends conversation and them wham, it ended. Like leaving without saying goodbye. I love the book though.

I like that he ended it with snow in Japan (the best gift of all, as he describes it), but yes you're right there's no rounding up and ending in that sense. Maybe as it's a very personal book about his favourite time of year he preferred just to 'slip away'.
