I had never heard of her until this morning! Does that just say something about my being Welsh, do you suppose?

Cornflower

I think many Scots people nowadays would not know of her.
There used to be a maternity hospital in Edinburgh that was named after her; when that closed around 30 years ago the site was redeveloped and as far as I know there is still a building bearing her name there, and a plaque on her house in the West End, but considering how well known she was at the time of her death it is surprising - and sad - that few recognise her name and achievements today.

I hadn't heard of her either..she sounds like an admirable woman.

A name I hadn’t heard of either, so well done the BBC ( and Cornflower) for educating me. I have read The Roses of No Man’s Land, by Lyn Macdonald, about the volunteer nurses in WW1. Dr Elsie Inglis gets a small mention but very interesting to read more about her. Your blog is always leading me down new paths of learning!

Toffeeapple

I agree that it is sad.
