Stopping by Woods

    A new engraving by Angie Lewin, Stopping by Woods is inspired by Robert Frost's poem:

Whose woods these are I think I know.   

His house is in the village though;   

He will not see me stopping here   

To watch his woods fill up with snow.   

My little horse must think it queer   

To stop without a farmhouse near   

Between the woods and frozen lake   

The darkest evening of the year. 

He gives his harness bells a shake   

To ask if there is some mistake.   

The only other sound’s the sweep   

Of easy wind and downy flake.   

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,   

But I have promises to keep,   

And miles to go before I sleep,  

And miles to go before I sleep.

Here's a story from my mother that I'm privileged to share: my mother had lunch with Robert Frost one time (she was friends with the daughter of his longtime housekeeper). During the meal, they were chatting (!!) about memorizing poems and Mom mentioned that she had trouble remembering if the line from "Stopping" was "coldest" or "darkest" "evening of the year," and Frost said, "It's darkest, because in order to say "coldest" you would have had to have measured it, and I didn't want to bring in that kind of mathematical detail."

I have always treasured that story, and its view of Frost's poetic awareness is wonderful!
