This is Just Knit It by Susan Ashcroft, a wide but shallow (62" x 11") triangular scarf/shawl that requires you to cast on three stitches and then knit into the front and back of the first and last stitch of every row. That's all there is to it! The pattern gives instructions for an optional edging, but I made mine without, and of course you could knit it in any weight of yarn and to any size, so it's versatile as well as mindless.
The yarn is Skein merino/cashmere fingering 'Briar' - very soft and cosy, but light.

If you're a knitter with an interest in sheep, take a look at this short post on James Rebanks' excellent The Shepherd's Life: A Tale of the Lake District. The author farms Herdwicks and Swaledales, breeds whose wool is too coarse to be used for knitting, but the book is a fascinating account of a very tough way of life in an extremely beautiful part of Britain, and of the care and management of sheep in traditional ways. (See also Philip Walling's Counting Sheep: A Celebration of the Pastoral Heritage of Britain.)
You are so good at these, fabulous colors again.

Cornflower, please could you tell me what size needles you used for this, I'm very much a novice and don't want to have to have numerous tries before I find the right size.

By all means, Carole - I used 3.25mm needles (80cm circular) and am very happy with the result.
