From one Close to another ... this sundial is part of Malmesbury House in the Cathedral Close, Salisbury. Click here for an informative article and pictures of the beautiful interior, and here is Macbeth's soliloquy from which the inscription comes:

To the last syllable of recorded time;

That struts and frets his hour upon the stage

Signifying nothing."
By the way, if you have around £5,000,000 to spare, you could live just across the Close in this fine residence.
Last time I was there, by chance it was Open Gardens day and we visited a lovely house in the Close. I wonder if it was that one? It certainly looks similar. And Mompesson House, too, which had a lovely garden.

Oh, how lovely it would be to explore all those gardens (though perhaps on a nicer day than the one we had - such a cold wind!).

When I was there about 25 years ago there was a harpsichord maker's workshop nearby. I had a brief conversation with the owner, I suspect it is long gone; did you happen upon it?
