There was a high cornflower quotient in last night's Bees, Butterflies and Blooms programme, and I was very taken with the wild flower seed mixes Sarah Raven was trialling in her own garden. I think I'll be buying some of the Pastel Annual Mix she sowed to such lovely effect, but after watching the series, reading Sarah's book, and grasping the importance of planting for the pollinators, I'm determined to give over more space in my garden to the likes of these plants.
Good for you! It's the guiding principle of "The Cottage"; perhaps you just thought it was unkempt :-)
Off to teach in Germany in a few hours so I expect you'll get some peace from me until next week.

Not quite the cornflower we know and love - this headline made me snigger and think of you... (yes I do have a lot of time on my hands at work with the bosses on a business trip): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2105360/Schoolgirl-12-eat-double-bodyweight-cornflower-year-slip-coma.html

Oh, the power of television; it seems to be out of stock already! Perhaps you can make up your own mix.
I thought it was neat the way the cornflowers were the least dominant plants in all the mixes, but popped up here and there like exclamation marks. Trying to turn this into some flattering remark about your own blog but my brain is too tired.
Hint for people who garden on clay: direct sowing such as we saw yesterday evening rarely succeeds in my experience. OTOH perennials like Verbena bonariensis are pollinator-friendly and will self seed.
