The endlessly inventive (and tireless) Alexander McCall Smith has come up with the idea of creating an enormous tapestry to depict Scotland's history. Working with artist Andrew Crummy and history writer Alistair Moffat, his plan is to tell the story of Scotland in over 100 panels which will be stitched by volunteers. The tapestry will be two years in the making and will be handed over to the nation on completion, going on display from August 2013, and the Edinburgh publishing house Birlinn will be bringing out a book on the project. Where can I find the list and who are "the trustees"? I can't sadly offer to contribute physically, but I'd certainly be interested in seeing the list and commenting upon it.

Ah, but which Scottish history will it be? Something approaching the ground truth (whatever that is) or the normal tartan fantasy and unendying feud with the dastardly English? I suspect that a project of this kind will have a good helping of myth, but I hope to be proved wrong.

I'm hoping to see Hume, Brewster, Maxwell, Tait, Bell, Forest, Musgrave and other great Scottish luminaries illustrated rather than any White Heather Club myth-making. Surely I'm not being too optimistic am I? I still can't find the magic list to comment upon the suggestions, but perhaps all will be revealed on Saturday.
