Looking through the catalogue for yesterday's RSW exhibition, I noticed this photograph of the Society's patron, H.R.H. The Duke of Rothesay (as he is known in Scotland). While two of Prince Charles' own paintings appear in the exhibition - I failed to spot them first time round but shall find them on my next visit - it's the royal sock I'm studying, specifically the detail of the cuff:
I like that stitch pattern - does anyone know what it's called?
ooooooooooooo - I'm liking the 'Royal Sock' cuff too. Though the socks themselves look extremely itchy :0(
What makes me smile about this photo, is how tightly HRH has his knees squeezed together ;0)

Exactly Jill. Heaven forbid that we get a sight of the Royal boxer shorts! I wonder if they would they be embroidered with The Prince of Wales feathers?

OMG - now I've started thinking about what undies HRH might wear . Perhaps they're Union Jack, or the Welsh Flag, or says the day of the week (ha ha - I like this idea). But, what if HRH is totally, you know, c.o.m.m.a.n.d.o!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - aaarrrgggghhhhhh!!!!! Oh look, something is actually happening in my life now and I can think of other things.

I love that you spotted the socks Karen, they are rather lovely. As for the ladies above!! What one-track minds and now you've got me thinking too, this is not good, not good at all. As the socks are handmade, is it possible the underpants are too?

What underpants??

Is the answer "hideous" ?
Miaow!

Ahem, the voice of non-prurient reason here. I think the pattern is basket stitch?
The current issue of The Knitter has an article about knitting in art. It includes Brian Organ's portrait of HRH wearing a handknit sweater.

That's a basketweave stitch to be sure.

All I can think about even after all the banter about the royal under garments, is: how much will those socks ITCH? I feel like scratching just looking at them!

What name does he paint under?
Did you see the piece which was a collection of thank you letters? And did you spot the howler of a mistake in it?
I liked the BNP cookbook too. Very clever.

Wonder who knitted them. . .

The catalogue lists him as the Duke of Rothesay, so I'll linger longer next time and have a look. Saw the thankyou letters but not the cookbook; really liked the spoons!

Ladies, thankyou all!

Definitely a type of basket weave stitch but I've never seen anything like that with a rib stitch instead of a plain. In fact, a quick search on the web tells me it's most likely "basket rib". Looks like it would be fun to try!
