... just call it a swatch (any resemblance to the cuff of a sock is purely coincidental).
I was intending only to see how the yarn worked when knitted, so I slung the skein round my neck and got going. Having reached the point you see above, I had to decide what to do next so I took the other end of the yarn and some more needles and cast on to try out a particular stitch pattern. I must have looked quite odd, draped in lengths of merino and attached to two lots of knitting, but the experiment told me what I wanted to know, I've rattled back the tiny experimental piece and the sock swatch continues. The colours remind me of a pheasant's plumage.
Those colours are gorgeous, can't wait to see what it looks like when it's finished.

The colours in that skein are absolutely beautiful; I quite envy you with winter and lots of knitting coming up. Here we're facing another terribly hot summer with strict water restrictions; all the lawns (and many plants) die and anyone who has a green lawn is regarded with the utmost suspicion!

Now I love the image of you encircled by your yarn and I am very impressed that you haven't ended up in a tangle! Gorgeous seasonal colours.
