Biscuit-making was slotted, if not seamlessly, then with minimal disruption, into the morning's schedule, which otherwise involved the fairly mundane. But I rather fancied these when I saw the recipe in Sarah Raven's Complete Christmas
so while I made them for all of us, I can't deny there was a little self-indulgence involved.
They are Chocolate and Ginger Crisps, rough in texture due to chunks of dark chocolate, slices of stem ginger and chopped hazelnuts, with ginger syrup added to deepen the flavour. Do I tempt you?
Sarah Raven suggests, in addition to eating them with tea or coffee, serving them with simple fruit puddings such as poached pears or ice cream, and for variation she recommends pecans instead of hazelnuts and white chocolate in place of dark.
It's as well I did my baking in the morning as Mr. C. is now ensconced in the kitchen making brandy butter, cranberry jelly, and - if I ask him nicely - Whim Wham!

You know how much I appreciate your cooking, and these look delicious, but I'm not sure I'd like them as I really don't go for stem-ginger. I'm sure everyone chez vous would be most dissapointed if I had to refuse one! The dictionaries I can access quickly suggest to me that a Whim Wham is a whimsical ornament or dress, is Mr C crocheting for you now? AH! more research suggests an 18thC trifle - that is more plausible I think.

I was just going to ask what a Whim Wham was -- no doubt you will tell us if Peter is right. The biscuits look wonderful. I can't imagine why you and your family are not all extremely fat -- I'm sure we would be if you were cooking for us.

I ADORE stem ginger ... when peckish I just have a lump of it straight out of the jar as some might indulge in ice cream from the tub!

Those sound fabulous but I have now been to five (5!!!) shops trying to find ginger in syrup. I can't believe it, but it seems to have disappeared. I guess I must have been the only one buying it.
