The Book Group will be discussing Voss on Saturday (and stand by for something scrumptious in an Australian-themed Books and Cakes tomorrow), but when we've finished with poor old Johann Ulrich we shall be moving on to 1939 Germany and our next volume, Markus Zusak's The Book Thief
.
There should be no difficulty in getting hold of a copy of this bestseller, rave reviews of which I've seen on many reliable sites. If you've read it already, please join in the discussion which will take place on Saturday, 14th. June, and if you'd like to give it a go, please do and give us your opinion on it here on Cornflower in a month's time - and you're welcome to join in regardless of whether or not you've read any of our earlier books.
To whet your appetite, this is what "The Guardian" had to say about it: "Unsettling, thought-provoking, life affirming, triumphant and tragic, this is a novel of breathtaking scope, masterfully told. An important piece of work, but also a wonderful page-turner." "A magical tale", "absorbing and searing" say "Elle" and "The Washington Post" respectively.
I expect "The Book Thief" will have greater appeal than our current book (!) so let's hope for a good turnout for our discussion. Who's willing to try this one?
Me Karen, especially as I think? it was me who suggested it. I am very much looking forward to reading it again.
Thank you also for highlighting Child 44 a few months back. I picked it up at the airport recently - and it was just the perfect read to keep my mind off being 30 some thousnad feet up in the air. Finished it in one 11 hour flight. A gripping read. Thank you...

Delighted by this choice. I've been meaning to read it for AGES and am glad that there's now a good reason to go and get hold of the book!

I'll check out my public/university libraries this weekend. I will always read the Cornflower Book Group book if I can get my hands on it (regardless of whether I "know" I will like/hate it) or else I'll bow out gracefully from participating in this activity .

"Greater appeal than our current book"? That's what the military would call "situating the appreciation"!

I'm working on a pattern named after Leisl in this, not for any particular reason other than the fact that I was listening to the audio version while knitting it - the audio is wonderful.

I'll try to join in this time. I have The Book Thief - it's been sitting in the TBR Bookcase now for some months. It's about time I started it.

I'm also delighted by this choice ... I've also been meaning to read it for a while ... and I'm also really looking forward to it.
Great choice.

I was not able to find Voss easily, so I will be unable to discuss this month's book. Have seen many copies of The Book Thief and have been thinking of reading it soon.

Getting a copy was just too easy! Just went out to my local public library, which now opens on a Sunday, and have returned with a copy of "The Book Thief". To judge by the number of copies (>30) in the libraries in Camden (my local council in London) this is a very popular book; nearly every copy was on loan too.
