Our recording of Bach's St. Matthew Passion features the wonderful Kathleen Ferrier. I'd hoped to find a link to her singing the aria "If my tears be unavailing", but could not. You can hear Julia Hamari's less distinctive recording of the piece here, or listen to Kathleen Ferrier herself sing "Have mercy, Lord, on me" from the Passion in this clip.

May I commend the splendid Anne Sophie von Otter's singing on the St Matthew Passion recorded in 1988 at Aldburgh, conductor John Elliot Gardner. Available on Archiv. I have not heard the version with Ferrier so I will not offer any opinion on their relative merits; the music itself is absolutely wonderful and that is what matters most.

How lovely, on Good Friday, to hear the splendid voice of Kathleen Ferrier, a voice once heard, never forgotten.
