The visit of a friend makes a welcome prompt to get out and see our own city - too often ignored or overlooked when we're pressed for time or inclined simply to stay at home. Today we went to a couple of fine galleries, home now to collections of modern art, but previously used as a school and an orphanage respectively. Above is the former John Watson's College with Charles Jencks's earthworks "Landform" in the foreground.
Across the road is what was the Dean Orphanage, and how forbidding it must have looked to the children who were sent there. Nowadays it's a place with a good cafe, attractive grounds to wander in, a shop - of course - and interesting exhibitions. It was here I saw an amazing collection of Scottish Colourists and later, works by Winifred Nicholson, but today we spent more time out than in, including a short walk around the neighbouring Dean Cemetery in search of the grave of Dr. Elsie Inglis, a particular heroine of mine. Despite several attempts, I've yet to find it.
Still on the subject of galleries, here's the one I lunched at the other day:-
After all this gallivanting, tomorrow I'll be back to 'auld claes and porridge'....
I love the Landform.
Do you think I could have one for my garden?

I didn't see the Winifred Nicholson link last year, so good to be reminded of her uniquely beautiful work. The seaside looked lovely yesterday, what good hosts you are, I'm sure the food was delectable too!

Dark Puss has found a photograph of the headstone of Dr Inglis, so this may help your search.

I was just talking with someone recently about this very thing - that we tend not to visit places around us. She has a friend in a city and that friend hardly ever goes out to all that city offers. And I know a lot of folks in my area don't take advantage of all the nature activities. Isn't it interesting.

We certainly do some of our best sight-seeing when we have company. Gorgeous photos, as always.
