It's one thing to make a pair of baby's booties in an hour or two; it's quite another to knit socks for a man with size 10 feet. Greater love hath no woman than to fashion a pair of "Gentleman's Plain Winter Socks" (made to the wearer's 'extra-long' specification) for her husband. I must qualify that by saying that only one sock is finished, but I did cast on for the second last night.
The pattern is in Nancy Bush's lovely book, Knitting Vintage Socks, and the yarn is "Gardening in the Rain" (how could I resist that name?) from The Yarn Yard.
And I've been rash enough to promise him cashmere ones next!
You're spoiling him, Cornflower! Next he'll need a scarf, then a matching sweater... Who knows where it'll end?
They're lovely, they really are. Beautiful work!

Cashmere! This must be love.
May I recommend Elizabeth Zimmerman's pattern with the easily replaceable toe and heel? (Why are men so much harder on socks than women?)
Nancy Bush is my idol. Her dedication to socks is an ispiration.

Wow, this finished sock should definitely count as a pair, I think! That's a lot of knitting! Nice to see you "spoiling" your hubby. :0)

Mr Cornflower confirms that he is definitely, irreparably spoiled and loves every minute.

A fine pair of socks and you have all my sympathies, I am currently working on a pair of size 12 and not feeling kind about them. At least they are not extra long.

Why has it taken me so long to stumble across this informative posting? My husband has size 14 feet. Shop-bought socks are no good. This, however, could be the solution.
